Quintana then teamed up with victor Anacona, who fell back from the initial break to support his leader.

He finished safely in the main bunch as the sprinters contested the last action of the three-week race around the Champs Elysees.

Kenyan-born Froome, who has had to fend off unsupported allegations of doping, having urine thrown over by a spectator and being spat at by another, admitted that he had been “on the limit” on the final ascent of a grueling Tour.
