Serena Williams: Another Grand Slam, another final, another title?
Three ferocious serves – ace, ace, ace – sealed with a forehand victor at the net, and she was on to her seventh Australian Open final by defeating No. 4 Agnieszka Radwanska 6-0, 6-4.
So she’s reaching out to someone who might be able to help – Steffi Graf, who leads Williams by one major title on the all-time list and was the last German to win the Australian Open in 1994.
Only Australian legend Margaret Court (24) has won more grand slam crowns. An epic seventh game, including the first deuce of the match, allowed her to hold serve.
“I think everything is stoppable at some point, I guess”, Williams said.
“I think so. There was just no mistake”, she said.
Williams’ win over fourth-seeded Radwanska provided another reminder of her dominance in the women’s game.
Maria Sharapova has now lost 19 out of her 21 matches against Serena Williams.
In an instant, Williams leapt ahead of Radwanska, securing a break in the first game of their semifinal match. “So I think it will be a long match and it will be a good match to see where I am”, she added.
HEAD-TO-HEAD: Williams, as is the case with almost all of the top 25 players, has a winning career record over Kerber, having won five of their six matches (newcomer Belinda Bencic is the exception, she and Williams are 1-1).
The first set of her semi against Radwanska was over in just 20 minutes, although the Pole did at least offer some resistance in the second set.
Williams, who played her first Grand Slam at the 1998 Australian Open, said she had surprised even herself by continuing to play well into her 30s.
Kerber said: “I hope so, Steffi write to me please!”
The No. 4-ranked Radwanska had just one victor in the opening set a forehand cross-court shot in the fourth game. It’s motivating because she’s at a different level and she makes you go back to the drawing board, not just for me but for many other players.
Williams showed what she could do against a player of Kerber’s ilk in the semis, though, when she beat Radwanska in just over an hour.
Making history has not always come easily to Williams, who previous year crumbled when two wins away from the calendar grand slam, which would have been a first since Graf’s in 1988. Unforced errors proved to be the key stat in the match: Konta finished with 36 while her opponent had a cleaner game, finishing with just 11 unforced errors.
Kerber and Konta play later Thursday, with whoever wins facing a huge obstacle to be crowned champion.
Angelique Kerber has won the first set 7-5 in her Australian Open semifinal against Johanna Konta. She’s beaten me before, too (at the 2012 Cincinnati tournament), and pretty good.
Andy Murray from Britain beat David Ferrer of Spain 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-3 to reach the semifinals at a Grand Slam for the 18th time.
The first men’s semifinal between defending champion Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer will open the night session Thursday. “I still have to win two matches against potentially two extremely tough opponents”, she said. The 26-year-old is now in the best form of her life after winning big at the WTA Tour Finals last year and did actually get an unofficial win against Williams on Australian soil last year, winning 6-4, 6-7(3), 6-1 at the Hopman Cup.
“I’m really looking forward to playing Serena in the final”, Kerber said.
