Scotland share trophy after washout

Hong Kong finished fourth in the ICC World Twenty20 Qualifier cricket tournament after their third-place play-off against Ireland was abandoned on Sunday because of rain in Dublin. Things hadn’t looked too promising from the start of the day itself, which began wet and gloomy.

The rain was relentless throughout the day with no respite and the play was eventually called off by 2:55pm local time.

The four teams had already sealed their places at next year’s World Twenty20 in India along with Afghanistan and Oman. Netherlands, on the other hand, had to get past Namibia in the second Qualifying play-off, before it defeated Ireland by five wickets in the second semi-final to set up a final date with Scotland.

Scotland will be making their third appearance at the World Twenty20 with their last involvement coming in 2009 and their skipper Preston Mommsen admitted that it was a dream come true to reach the finals.

Stephan Baard of Namibia ended as leading run-scorer with 309 runs in eight games while John Mooney of Ireland, Alasdair Evans of Scotland and Scholtz ended with 14 wickets.
