Turkey claims Russian jet ‘violates Turkish airspace’
Another Russian jet bomber has violated Turkish airspace, according to the country’s foreign ministry, just months after Turkey’s military shot down another Russian military jet.
Ankara summoned the Russian ambassador to the foreign ministry on Friday to “strongly protest and condemn” the violation, the ministry added. The past incident seriously strained the previously close ties between the two countries, damaging a strong economic partnership.
Ankara and the Kremlin gave conflicting accounts of the incident, which occurred in an area near the Turkish-Syrian border straddling Iskenderun and Latakia.
“We stress once again that all the responsibility for any unwanted grave consequences as a result of any such irresponsible behavior will belong entirely to the Russian Federation”, it said.
There was no immediate comment on the incident from Moscow. The plane went down in Syria with Moscow saying that it only spent 17 seconds over Turkish territory. One of the two pilots was killed in the incident.
In response, Vladimir Putin signed a decree imposing a number of sanctions against Turkey.
