British star Murray will face Djokovic in final
“Last year here is a good match for me to look at because the tennis, in my opinion, wasn’t miles apart”.
Will this be Novak Djokovic’s year at the Olympic Games, or will Andy Murray win for the second time?
“(I’ve) been in the situation before where (I) haven’t won specific tournaments, like Roland Garros, for example, against players like (Rafael) Nadal who were dominating there”, Djokovic said.
Saturday’s women’s singles final pits top-ranked Serena Williams against seventh-seeded Angelique Kerber.
Here are five things to know ahead of their Sunday night (3 a.m. ET, ESPN) showdown at Rod Laver Arena.
It is the first time two brothers have reached separate finals at the same grand slam since Lawrence and Reginald Doherty at Wimbledon in 1906 and the first time ever at the Australian Open.
The world No 14, who has always been regarded as the best of the next generation of players, is normally a cool head, but when he saw the match slipping away from him after he dropped his serve in the first game of the deciding set he smashed his racket on the floor in frustration. What’s more, three of Murray’s defeats have come against Djokovic. Murray is No. 2.
Raonic was dominant in stretches, and his aggressive serve-and-volley game troubled Murray.
“I couldn’t push off, I couldn’t get up to serve, and I couldn’t change direction”, Raonic said.
“I don’t think many people are expecting me to win”, he said after his semifinal win over Milos Raonic on Friday night.
Djokovic holds a 6-2 win-loss record against the Scot in slams and a 3-2 advantage in major finals. He won neither time.
Murray was twice a set down against Raonic, who served 23 aces to Murray’s nine and hit 72 winners to the Briton’s 38.
For Murray and Soares, it was the first major title in either of their careers.
“These are the kind of occasions that define you as a tennis player. It’s been a great two weeks for us and hopefully with one more match we can get over the final hurdle”.
“Andy, you should be in bed, but we’ll be in bed to support you tomorrow”, Jamie joked during his speech on court.
Serbia’s Novak Djokovic receives a racquet from his coach Boris Becker during a practice session on the eve of his final match against Britain’s Andy Murray, at the Australian Open at Melbourne Park, Australia, January 30, 2016.
Murray also has one day less to recover than his opponent, who played his semi-final on Thursday, and the top seed spent 104 minutes fewer beating Roger Federer in four sets. Thus, Djokovic has an extra 24 hours to recover. “If you play a quick match on the Friday, it doesn’t really make a huge difference”. With Raonic struggling with his movement in the latter stages, Murray went on to close out a victory that sets up another confrontation with his great rival, Novak Djokovic, in Sunday’s final.
Raonic, bidding to reach his first major final, was hampered by an injury to his right adductor muscle from the end of the third set and by the fifth he was severely impaired. Upset at his sliding performance, Raonic lashed out during the fifth set.
The response echoed his previous comments that he wanted to be there “to try and help out, just be there for whatever is really required of me”.
