Australian Open: Novak Djokovic looks to join Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg
Jamie Murray was runner-up at the last two majors – the 2015 U.S. Open and Wimbledon – with a different partner, John Peers.
Novak Djokovic is poised to enter Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg territory as he chases a record-equalling sixth Australian Open title in Sunday’s final against Andy Murray.
Brother Jamie is already through to today’s doubles final – the first time brothers have reached the singles and doubles finals at a Grand Slam.
The Canadian, the only man to achieve more than 1,000 career doubles match wins, still owns eight Grand Slam doubles trophies and a record 88 titles overall.
“I was on Twitter yesterday and somebody wrote that if I won I was going to go to number two”.
On the other side of the world, the Australian Open is the first Grand Slam of the year.
But Murray was back on court at Melbourne Park less than 18 hours later to practice with coach Amelie Mauresmo, not appearing physically hampered by the lengthy match. Murray won more points returning opponent’s first serves (150-133), while Djokovic was the deadlier at winning points off the second serves of opponents (152-148).

Andy Murray was confidently ambling in to the net when Novak Djokovic somehow pulled off a miraculous victor during their Australian Open final.
Not only did the Murray brothers make the finals in singles and doubles, but fellow Scot Gordon Reid won the men’s wheelchair event on Saturday over Joachim Gerard of Belgium 7-6 (7) 6-4.
“Andy, you should be in bed”.
“If you want to win against Novak, it’s going to be physical”, he said.
Brazilian Bruno Soares has claimed his second title at this year’s Australian Open after teaming up with Russian Elena Vesnina to win the mixed doubles.
“I think serve is an important factor in tomorrow’s match”.
Murray knows that statistics such as which finalist played their last four match first is unlikely to have too much bearing on a contest between two supremely fit athletes. History suggests Djokovic will win, but he has looked vulnerable at times on his way to the championship match. They started off strong but couldn’t match their impressive play from the opening set.
Djokovic has never lost a final at the Australian Open, while Murray is 0-4 in finals here.
Murray becomes only the second player in the Open era to lose five finals at the same grand slam and his record against Djokovic now reads 22 defeats in 31 meetings, and 11 in his last 12. “Djokovic not only broke the Nadal-Federer stranglehold on the game’s major trophies, the 23-year-old Serbian made a compelling case to be admitted to their elite company”, said the Sydney Morning Herald.
Angelique Kerber has gone where at least one fearless soul before her has – for a quick swim in the murky Yarra River after winning the Australian Open.
It’ll be a busy day for Mirza, who is teaming with Martina Hingis in the women’s doubles final to follow on Rod Laver Arena.
