Some Flint water so contaminated it’s untreatable
Not a single lead-contaminated water pipe in Flint, Michigan has been repaired or replaced.
As part of a partnership with Icelandic Glacial, she donated 181,440 bottles of water to Flint, after the lead contamination was first uncovered in the city’s drinking water. The water from more than two dozen city locations has higher lead levels than filters can handle.
Some filters, specifically gravity-fed ones certified by the National Sanitation Foundation, are able to remove reasonable amounts of lead from drinking water, about 150 parts per billion. Governor Snyder said Friday he hopes the water in Flint may be safe to drink again in three months. Hedman knew about the water contamination, Chaffetz said, but she failed to disclosed the problem.
In light of that spirit of collaboration, Snyder invited the many state representatives and senators in attendance on stage while he signed legislation bringing $28 million to immediately help people in Flint with lead testing, treatment and other emergency measures. Their effort to switch back was rebuffed by the Snyder-appointed emergency city manager, who declared that the water was safe.
One email read: “While the City of Flint states that corrective actions are not necessary, DTMB is in the process of providing a water cooler on each occupied floor, positioned near the water fountain, so you can choose which water to drink”. But they also urged residents to have their water tested, if they had not done so already. A series of bad decisions, apparently meant to save money, fed dirty improperly treated water from the Flint River through the city’s plumbing for more than a year.
Moore laid out five points, among them retribution for those he blames for the problem and a combination of state and federal responses.
“We have identified, in terms of test results even over the last few months, about 45 kids out of a couple of thousands tested that have high blood lead levels, but we are assuming a lot of other kids could have it because lead in blood only stays for so long”, the governor said.
“We take for granted the quality of our water in the city of St. Paul”, Coleman said.
“Many questions still remain regarding the state’s ability to manage this crisis and only highlights the need for a continued and amplified federal role”, Ananich said in a statement.
Progress Michigan, a liberal group critical of Republican Gov. Rick Snyder, released state emails Thursday describing how water was being provided to the building.
“Appears certain state departments are concerned with Flint’s WQ [water quality]”, Prysby wrote on January 9, 2015. From there, the water is distributed via pipes to about 425,000 people in the the water services’ coverage area, which includes St. Paul and its inner-ring suburbs.
