Thousands Rally for Sanders Days Before Iowa Caucus
According to a news release from the Sanders campaign, the office will be located at 349 Allen Street. He considers Sanders a hero, like he considered Wellstone a hero, he said, tearing up while he spoke of Wellstone. He said his is truly a grassroots effort by regular Americans as evidenced by the fact that his is the only DFL camp without a super pac and the first campaign in history to receive 2.5 million individual and mostly small contributions. A White House spokeswoman suggested no photos are expected.
In addition to decrying economic inequities, Sanders called for a $15 minimum wage, free tuition at state colleges and universities, campaign finance reform, and repairs to a “broken criminal justice system”, the Star Tribune says. He called for expanded funding for planned parenthood, gay marriage rights, and a commitment to dealing with climate change that leaves the globe a better place for future generations.
One of the biggest applause lines of the night came when Sanders delivered this standard line: “We are going to win this election without a SuperPAC!”
“This is unbelievable, I got to tell you”, Sanders said after he took the stage. He said he wanted to bring the sign because Sanders reminds him of Wellstone, calling them “two peas in a pod”. Republicans can win in November, he added, only if people are too demoralized too vote. Prior to Congress he served as mayor of Burlington, Vermont for eight years.
In response, Sanders said that he was in good health and that he’d release his medical records before the Iowa caucus on February 1, assuring voters that they wouldn’t find anything out of the ordinary.
Of democratic Minnesotan registered voters surveyed last week by the Star Tribune, 59 percent reported a preference for Hillary Clinton, while one in four preferred Sanders for the presidential nomination. He’s also ahead in New Hampshire polls ahead of that state’s February 9 primary. Minnesota’s delegates to the national Democratic convention will be decided based on the results of the straw poll at those caucuses in neighborhoods across the state.
Capitalizing on the support it has seen in western MA, U.S. Sen. Becky Lourey introduced Sanders, urging supporters to remain active through the campaign into the March 1 caucuses and beyond.
Dan Russell, DECC executive director, confirmed the crowd was “well over 5,000 … closer to 6,000”.
