Gomez wins Sony Open in a playoff
On the par-3 fourth, Snedeker made a 20-foot birdie putt, and then finished with a good chip out of the rough to 4 feet for birdie on the par-5 ninth. The second-year PGA Tour pro hit an excellent shot with his hybrid from just of the green on the par-three 17th hole, but his birdie bid just missed.
Gomez two-putted from the front of the green for birdie, collecting the second US PGA Tour title of his career when Snedeker just missed his birdie chance from 10 feet.
Gomez defeated Brandt Snedeker on the second playoff hole.
Englishman Greg Owen enjoyed an excellent final day, carding a round of 66 to finish in a tie for fifth alongside FedEx Cup points leader Kevin Kisner, who had a disappointing level-par 70 on Sunday.
Tabuena, who won the Philippine Open last month at Luisita in Tarlac, had four birdies against two bogeys for a 139 tally in the event now being paced by American Brandt Snedeker. I got on a streak with seven putts in a row.
Gomez entered the final round in round 14 but carded a remarkable 62 to finish 20 under, tied with Snedeker who shot 66 on the final day.
His 62 is the lowest closing round by a Sony Open champion. And needing a 10-foot birdie to extend the playoff, he didn’t give it enough pace and watched it tail off to the right of the hole. I know I’m going to have to make some birdies tomorrow.
“I’m really excited about being able to get in the Olympics”, Gomez said.
“I had some good looks coming down the stretch and uncharacteristically I hit some pretty weak putts”.
The Argentinean upped the ante on the second play-off hole, shooting a birdie which Snedeker could not match as he missed a 10-foot putt to force a third hole.
He then pulled within a stroke of Gomez with a birdie on the par-4 12th hole with a cold-blooded putting stroke.
