The caucuses are held in 10 U.S. states (out of 50) – Iowa, Alaska, Colorado, Hawaii, Kansas, Maine, Minnesota, Nevada, North Dakota and Wyoming.

The Iowa poll was conducted January 26-29 based on telephone interviews with 602 registered voters who say they definitely or probably will attend the 2016 Republican caucuses, and 602 registered voters who say they will definitely or probably attend the Demcoratic caucuses. “We’re 36 hours away from the Iowa caucuses and we’re in a statistical dead heat for first place”.
If the bad weather hits, experts say, candidates with better-organized ground campaigns or with more passionate supporters stand a better chance. The poll is the last to be released by the newspaper before the Iowa caucuses begin Monday.

But where the number does fall is a bit of a guessing game – more hunch than science – for outsiders.

In 1996, Bob Dole won Iowa, but Pat Buchanan ran a strong second – stronger than expected – so he got a bounce out of Iowa and ended up winning New Hampshire, too, although not the nomination. The milder-than-normal weather forecast could play a role.
