Trump says he ‘wanted to do’ debate on Fox
Using various clips from Trump’s past and present, Colbert moderated a debate between “Donald” and “Mr. Trump” that demonstrated just how malleable his positions really are.
“The fact is, when somebody doesn’t treat you properly you’ve got to be tough, you’ve got to be strong”, said Trump, referring to his months-long string of attacks on Kelly, which began after she asked him about his rhetoric regarding women in the first Fox debate in August.
But he said the real estate tycoon and reality TV star showed weakness by backing out of the debate to protest what he sees as “unfair” treatment by Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly. “Did you plan that?” Colbert ended the “all-Trump” debate by thanking both Trumps for “being just as divided as this country is”.
Even though Trump was not in attendance, his presence was felt during the night, even with the late night comics.
Santorum has been relegated to the so-called “undercard debate” because of his low poll numbers, which he insists should not be used to keep him off the main stage with Donald Trump, Sens.
By splicing together footage, he took viewers down memory lane to show that the billionaire has contradicted himself many times in the past.
Trump said his event had drawn more of a media presence, and said they’d raised more than $5 million for his personal foundation, including $1 million of his own funds, which will be distributed to veterans’ groups. Trump has repeatedly questioned the validity of Cruz’s American citizenship. It was then followed by a clip of the real estate mogul saying: “I really do – I like Ted Cruz a lot”.
“I don’t think you have to give up your liberty for a false sense of security”, said Sen.
“By missing the debate, he doesn’t have an “oops” moment”, Smith said. “I think we’re positioned to do very well here in Iowa”. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio and others who are doing better.
He also explained he was skipping the debate because he felt Fox News had dealt with him unfairly.
“You gotta get out on the 9 and you gotta vote”. Cruz desperately needs an Iowa win and believes he has the organizational ground game to grab one from the corn state’s caucus system.
Meanwhile, Trump shunned Thursday night’s debate and instead filled an auditorium a few miles down the road, trying to prove his widespread support only days before Iowa kicks off the U.S. nominating voting process, reports Reuters.
