FBI Releases Footage Of Oregon Militia Shooting
Group leader Ammon Bundy and seven other main figures in the takeover were arrested earlier in the week, majority in the traffic stop Tuesday night that erupted in gunfire.
The FBI released a 26-minute video leading to the arrest of five people and the death of Finicum, one of the spokesmen for the armed occupation of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge.
At the 1:20 mark in the video, a speaker believed to be David Fry said he had asked the Federal Bureau of Investigation whether it was possible to “get out of here without charges”, complaining “they keep saying they ‘can’t drop the charges, ‘ they ‘didn’t make the charges, ‘ they ‘can’t speak to the people who made the charges, ‘ so ‘that’s not possible”‘.
Bretzing said agents and troopers provided medical assistance to Finicum after they were confident they had addressed any further threats. Bretzing said Finicum had a loaded handgun in his pocket and he “on at least two occasions” reached his right hand toward the pocket inside his jacket. Because of the camera’s distance from the scene and general low resolution quality of the footage, it’s hard to say that this does much to prove or disprove the claims, but Finicum does appear to be reaching towards his waist.
In another video on Thursday morning, Fry said that one of the militants was wanted on a warrant, so only three of them were free to go.
Although the video shows Finicum with his hands up as he exits his truck, it also shows him beginning to reach into his pocket, possibly for the loaded weapon he had inside.
The remaining militants said they would not leave unless they had assurances that they would not be arrested.
“Multiple agencies put a lot of work into this to put the best tactical plan that they could to arrest them peacefully”, said Ward.
The network also organized a rolling rally through Burns on Saturday night, and said it planned more demonstrations to protest the killing of Finicum, and the presence of numerous heavily armed law enforcement officers at the standoff.
“At this time, OSP (state) troopers shot Finicum”.
“Please go home.” The protesters had been holed up at the refuge for over three weeks, protesting what they say is federal tyranny and government land-grabbing in the nation’s West.
At that point, the video shows an Oregon State Police trooper emerge from the treeline, walk towards Finicum, and at that point officers shoot him.
But U.S. Magistrate Judge Stacie Beckerman says that won’t happen until after the armed occupation ends.
Lawyers for Ammon Bundy said they have recorded a phone call with their client telling the four people remaining at the refuge that it is “his authentic desire for them to stand down”.
A memorial for Robert “LaVoy” Finicum is seen where he was shot and killed by law enforcement on a highway north of Burns, Ore., January 30, 2016.
“Right now underneath the tarp right there – LaVoy Finicum is sitting underneath the tarp, and he’s not going to let them come through”, Ritzheimer said in the video.
LaVoy Finicum walks through the compound as he and others occupy the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge headquarters on January 15, 2016 near Burns, Oregon. Bundy and four others were arrested during the encounter, and more followers were taken into custody by the next day.
Those still in the refuge wants promises from authorities that they won’t face any charges.
