Vanessa Hudgens announces father Greg’s death hours before Grease Live appearance
And time after time, “Grease: “Live” succeeded”, wrote Daniel Fienberg in The Hollywood Reporter.
‘That’s what makes live TV exciting, the unknown, ‘ he said. “It was alive”, gushed Entertainment Weekly’s Darren Franich.
Whether this means a bigger revival of musical shows is still unknown.
Hudgens is familiar with Grease since High School Musical, the television movie that made her a household name, was loosely based on the original Grease musical starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta. They were visibly perched in the bleachers as cast members danced around them.
“Grease Live” is originating from the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank. Here’s what worked, and what didn’t.
It featured the brunette all dressed up as the leader of the Pink Ladies while singing a rendition of Grease is the Word with her co-stars.
Splash News Aaron Tveit and Juliane Hough on the set of “Grease: Live”.
Vanessa Hudgens, 27, had her father in her heart and mind as she performed live in front of a TV audience estimated to be in the millions on Sunday night. It feels like a big party and you get to be a part of it. when I got the call saying that they were interested in me as Rizzo I said, really? The scenes inbetween, not so much.
While some people may think of Grease as a fairly innocuous musical for kids, remember that when Paramount re-released the film in theaters in 2010, it was rated PG-13.
The cast of dozens (hundreds?) also included Carly Rae Jepsen as Frenchy, Keke Palmer as Marty and Carlos Penavega as Kenickie.
A multitude of stars, costars, and fans alike commended Hudgens for her unbelievable performance, especially after she announced that her father died from stage 4 cancer less than 24 hours before her performance. Right after her dad Greg’s death, she belted out classics like “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” and “There Are Worse Things I Could Do”.
She even impressed Lin-Manuel Miranda, creator of the Broadway smash “Hamilton“.
Vanessa revealed in August that her father was battling stage four cancer, and recently suggested that his health may have taken a turn for the worse as she asked fans to pray for his recovery in an emotional tweet. “What a superhero. In total awe”, he tweeted.
