Cam Newton: An African-American QB with my skills scares people
They hide behind screen names and in chat rooms when going after Cam for basically giving none of the f-s about what they think a successful black athlete needs to say and how he needs to act.
The result was an 11-play, 75-yard drive that took 4:16, but resulted in Cotchery catching a 15-yard touchdown pass to put Carolina up 41-38, a lead which they held on to.
Frankly, it appeared the passing game was done for, once again leaving Newton to play with a bunch of mediocre personnel. Carolina averaged 31.2 points in the regular season and they’ve scored at least 31 points in eight of their past nine games. At first, the wideout seemed against the quarterback’s dab routine after scores. He refereed Green Bay-Arizona in the divisional round, when he had to redo the coin toss for overtime when the coin didn’t flip.
Urlacher probably wouldn’t mind seeing Newton winning, as long as the quarterback does it with less celebrating. “And that has something to do with [Cam and the Panthers being polarizing] also”.
The retired linebacker’s preference for Manning’s touchdown celebrations doesn’t mean he’s rooting for the Broncos to win the Super Bowl.
Supporters of the Seattle Seahawks, who were eliminated from the playoffs by the Panthers, were irked that Newton ripped down one of their signs at Carolina’s stadium and have started a petition to ban him from their stadium.
Newton, who has also attracted praise for his charity work, added that he did not intend to change his character.
It’s a fun dynamic, and there’s nothing wrong with having a little fun. Newton is different. He’s always been one to enjoy every minute out on the field, but it’s only now becoming an issue because the Panthers are the best team in the National Football League and the public hates to love winners.
“I don’t think people have seen what I am or what I’m trying to do”. While not specifically mentioning Newton, Urlacher prefers the actions of players like Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning, who typically has a more muted celebration in handing the ball to the official and just giving out high-fives.
I am going to translate this down even further: “If I were a white quarterback, I would not be polarizing”.
