Snedeker winds up a winner at Torrey Pines
PGA Tour officials say resumption of play in the final round of golf’s Farmers Insurance Open was delayed until 10 a.m.as crews clean up debris on the course.
Snedeker shot a three under par 69 despite raging wind and occasional rain in California as the weather finally forced some players into a Monday return to action.
United States golfer Brandt Snedeker tees off at the Farmers Insurance Open.
The final round suspended three times because of conditions deemed too severe to play, and it was uncertain if the Farmers Insurance Open would finish Sunday.
On the practice putting green, Snedeker got the news and thrust both fists in the air and hugged Vail.
Brandt Snedeker is the horse for the course at Torrey Pines. Snedeker then realized there was no crowd.
“I hit some shots, I probably hit some 25, 30 yard hook shots that ended up going dead straight just because of the severity of the wind”, Snedeker said. But kind of insane how everything panned out perfectly for me. “You couldn’t make up the strings of events that had to happen for me to have a chance”.
Snedeker won at 6-under 282, the highest winning scores at Torrey Pines since Fuzzy Zoeller in 1979.
Perhaps he should have known better, however, since he won the 2012 title at Torrey Pines despite heading into the final round seven shots off the lead.
Competition will resume today at 8am local time (midnight Malaysia time), at which time strong winds are forecast to continue blowing at Torrey Pines next to the Pacific Ocean.
The next best score to Snedeker was a 73 by Shane Lowry of Ireland. The final-round scoring average was 77.9, almost eight strokes worse than Snedeker’s score.
K.J. Choi watches his tee shot on the second hole during the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open golf tournament Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016, in San Diego.
Of course, the conditions likely won’t handicap so many players on the upcoming PGA Tour schedule. Choi couldn’t reach the green with a 3-wood.
Among 13 players back at Sentosa Golf Club at the break of dawn after Sunday’s final round was suspended because of a thunderstorm, Spieth sank a five-foot birdie putt on the last hole, where he had marked his ball overnight, completing a final round of 5-under 66 to finish at 11-under 273. Kevin Streelman made back-to-back bogeys late in his round and wound up with a hard-earned 74 to finish third. Johnson made nine bogeys in 12 holes, and then he made his first birdie on the 14th hole. “They got the raw end of the stick this morning”.
“It’s one of those days where you had to throw everything out of your mind and go play golf – try to grind and shoot the best you possibly could”.
This time, he’ll need some help from Mother Nature. Snedeker played the final 17 holes without bogey.
Snedeker somehow posted that 3-under round juuuust before play was called for the day on Sunday and the heavy damage started to occur.
“I looked outside my hotel room and there was no wind, and it looked pretty normal”, Snedeker said. I hate watching this stuff because I am in no control.
