Farmers Insurance OpenExtreme weather delays finish
Brandt Snedeker didn’t hit a single shot as the weather-delayed Farmers Insurance Open wrapped up Monday but he might have been as mentally exhausted as anybody on the grounds at Torrey Pines Golf Course in San Diego.
Still to be determined was whether his 3-under 69 in a raging wind and occasional rain Sunday at Torrey Pines would be good enough to win the Farmers Insurance Open. One of those is Jimmy Walker, who has played 10 holes and is at 7 under, one shot clear of Snedeker and K.J. Choi, who also is through 10 holes.
Snedeker bogeyed the par-4 first hole, had eighth consecutive pars, then had birdies on four of the five holes on his bogey-free back nine.
Snedeker’s one regret was not getting up-and-down for birdie on the par-5 18th hole, fearing that might leave him short of another unlikely victory at Torrey Pines.
PANAMA CITY – Ryan Armour won the Web.com Tour’s season-opening Panama Claro Championship on Sunday for his first victory in 217 career starts.
This time, his help might come from Mother Nature.
Several players were openly rooting for Snedeker because they wanted to see such a great round rewarded and thought it was unfair that the lead groups were able to stop playing.
Brandt Snedeker won the Farmers Insurance Open by one shot.
Choi, who led after the second and third rounds, was unable to maintain his momentum as he found himself on three-over once the round was suspended.
“You can not make up the extreme events that had to happen for me to have this chance, and they all fell in line perfectly”, he said. Of the 71 players in the weekend field, 23 shot 80 or higher in the final 18 holes.
“But more importantly I need to make sure I get a good finish, secure some FedEx cup points and keep this momentum moving forward into next week”.
“I wish we could play all year out here on the West Coast because I play fantastic and love being out here”, he said. The par-5 18th left a sliver of a chance for a red number, but it was impossible to get there in two and the wind made sure no one could spin it close to the front left pin location.
“I tweeted it out this morning that I don’t know how families and players deal with it. My wife saw I was a nervous wreck”. His fortunes did not change heading into the back nine as he made his fourth bogey of the round at the 10th.
“I hit some shots, I probably hit some 25, 30 yard hook shots that ended up going dead straight just because of the severity of the wind”, Snedeker said. He was one of the lucky ones he was out of the elements and had completed all four rounds.
