Last Iowa poll: Bernie Sanders, Hillary Clinton just 3 points apart
It will be a fitting scene for the final night before the first votes of the Democratic presidential nomination contest, a campaign in which Hillary Clinton has wrapped up the vast majority of national union endorsements.
The U.S. State Department conceded for the first time on Friday that intelligence officials were correct to say that at least 22 emails sent through Hillary Clinton’s private server contain some of the government’s most sensitive secrets.
Sanders’ strategy is “not just that I have, gee, this idea for childhood poverty”, Sanders recently told a Bloomberg Politics breakfast briefing here, dismissing Clinton’s earnest incrementalism.
For all the fevered Obama-is-a-socialist rhetoric of Republican imaginings, the facts remain that he ran – and has governed – largely as a rather centrist, pragmatist Democrat. “I will fight for you through this campaign and in the White House”. His campaign announced Sunday it had raised more than $20 millionin January, nearly all from small online donations.
“I think I am a different, and perhaps a better, candidate, so I hope that also shows”, Clinton said in an interview with the network that morning.
Sanders, in the days before voters caucus, has enjoyed an surge of excitement, too. Snowfall forecast to start Monday night appeared more likely to hinder the hopefuls in their rush out of Iowa than the voters going to caucus. Obama’s appeal eight years ago was a big factor in attracting those voters, but so far, there’s little evidence of a similar new voter turnout. “They are gravitating toward candidates that are disruptive and promising massive change”.
“Ted is a liar”. Continuing Sunday afternoon, Trump hammered Cruz for sending some Iowa voters a mailer that suggests they have committed a “voting violation” for poor participation in past presidential caucuses. Though Donald Trump, who is up, skipped the last one.
Republicans have been throwing that caution to the wind and going for it – in prime time, no less. Another immigration path is one leading to legal status short of citizenship. That continues in New Hampshire and beyond.
Robertson, an outspoken religious and social conservative, told the crowd that “depravity” and “perversion” grip the nation, and that Cruz is the antidote. It roared back. “Yeah we are!” The party organized a skimpy debate schedule and favored off-hours for TV viewers, by all appearances a move to shelter Clinton. A lot of Republicans don’t like him. Sanders is supported by 63 percent of caucus-goers under 35 and has strong support from men. That’s because he shrank a gap in preference polls to finish just behind Trump. “Cruz trusts God”, Robertson said.
Rubio, a favorite of mainstream Republicans, could benefit from a familiar caucus scenario. Marco Rubio, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush, Ohio Gov. John Kasich and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie – hasn’t put any of them in position to win Iowa or New Hampshire.
Mark Lansing, a Dubuque credit counselor, found Rubio to be “most articulate, the best opportunity for us to win in the fall, by far”. I honestly thought I’d never see the day come where I would write to you and get to say these words: “Please vote for Senator Bernie Sanders to be our next President of the United States of America”. Trump, he said, is “the worst possible candidate”.
Now a convoluted negotiation is underway between the Clinton and Sanders campaigns for more matchups. “I voted against the war in Iraq; she voted for the war in Iraq”, Sanders told Foreign Policy.
