Should welcome feds’ review of police
Although, San Francisco mayor Ed Lee seemingly stands behind the police chief on the way the racist and homophobic texts were handled, Lee did ask the U.S. Department of Justice to investigate the shooting of Woods. The decision comes two months after officers fatally shot Mario Woods, a black man, in an incident captured on video.
Officers must now report whenever they point their guns at suspects.
Lee and Police Chief Greg Stuhr, in addition to the American Civil Liberties Union, wrote to Lynch to request the Justice Department review.
“The review is in response to requests made by the mayor, from the chief, from elected city officials and community members, asking the Justice Department to examine the San Francisco Police Department and their use of force and their practices”, said Brian Stretch, acting USA attorney in San Francisco.
This review is meant to be a comprehensive examination of the police department’s policies and practices as well as how officers are kept accountable.
Do you think the pledge will break through the blue wall of silence, which has enabled brutality for decades? Officers said they only resorted to their firearms when Woods moved towards an officer, yet the video also shows that Woods was struggling to walk, with his arms at his sides, as officers surrounded him. People who wanted the chief of the San Francisco police removed interrupted the mayor’s inauguration on January 8. They said they hope to find ways to help the department bridge the gap between officers and the community.
After she found out, Williams, the leader of a minority police officers’ group, helped launch the idea of a pledge. There’s the reportedly law-abiding Black cyclist pulled over and detained by police, the rape survivor whose case reportedly went uninvestigated, the questions raised over the shooting of Alex Nieto, the officers who exchanged racist and homophobic tests who got off scot-free, and allegations of racial profiling and sexual assault by SFPD against Tenderloin suspects. In Cleveland, officers who used deadly force during a 2012 high-speed chase were cleared of charges in court, but the department on Tuesday fired six officers and suspended another six, Henry Gass reported for The Christian Science Monitor. The other was the discovery of a white officer’s use of a black slur in text messages when referring to officer Yulanda Williams’s promotion to sergeant, according to CBS San Francisco.
“It’s not a real investigation”, said a San Francisco law enforcement source familiar with the matter.
The U.S. Department of Justice is going to investigate the San Francisco police force. The SFPD review, led by the Office of Community Oriented Policing, will result in a report laying out recommended reforms as well as progress reports on their implementation.
Attorney John Burris, who represents Woods’ family, said late Sunday that he strongly supports the Department of Justice review.
In a statement, San Francisco police laid out their version of events, saying officers first confronted Woods because a witness identified him as the attacker in a stabbing earlier in the afternoon.
