Djokovic makes Australian Open final
On to Djokovic, who more or less had his way with Roger Federer in a 6-1, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 win that took 2 hours 19 minutes.
Djokovic has won six of his last eight head-to-head meetings against Federer including four in the their Grand Slam meetings.
Before the match, attention had focused on the first set, with Federer never having beaten Djokovic in a best-of-five match having dropped the opener. She was two matches away from a calendar-year Grand Slam in 2015 when she lost to Roberta Vinci in the U.S. Open semifinals.Physically Im feeling a lot better, mentally I needed that break after the Open, Williams said, but I didnt think I would do this well this fast..
“I played an unbelievable first two sets”, Djokovic said.
‘So that’s why I came out with, I think, a great deal of self-belief and confidence and intensity, concentration. The two-set lead was comforting, but it was a battle in the end.
He will now face either Britain’s Andy Murray or Canadian Milos Raonic, who play their semi-final on Friday.
“As long as you lose a set, it’s not a good thing”, said third seed Federer.
Djokovic broke Federer for a fifth time in the match in a sensational eighth game of the fourth set, featuring a forehand return victor for the break, and he safely served out for the match in the following game.
However, the 34-year-old conjured up some magic of his own in the last two sets.
Saturday’s women’s final will be between six-time Aussie victor Serena Williams and seventh-seeded German Angelique Kerber. I know it’s not easy.
Djokovic clinched victory after running away with the opening two sets in less than an hour. “I was very happy I got as much support as I did”.
Jamie Murray and Brazil’s Bruno Soares are through to the men’s doubles final at the Australian Open after a 6-3, 6-1 win over the French team of Adrian Mannarino and Lucas Pouille. And as he prepares to try and capture his 11th grand slam title at the 2016 Australian Open, we should all take the time do enjoy what the world No. 1 is doing right now. “I think these rivalries have allowed me to grow…and understand what it takes to be on the level that they are on”, he said. “I’ve played some of my best tennis here”.
The signs were ominous from the beginning for 17-time Grand Slam champion and No. 3-ranked Federer. Federer could not have started any slower, as he gifted Djokovic the break with four straight unforced errors. “If she wins, I’ll be very happy for her. I’m sure she’ll feel the same way”, Williams said.
Williams remains unbeaten in nine matches against Radwanska, whom she beat in the 2012 Wimbledon final. “I was really hitting just all the right shots, making little to no errors, which is kind of hard to play like that”. Djokovic, now into his sixth Australian final – he’s won all five previous – held his first service game at love and broke Federer in the second. “I thought even this time he looked like he was playing great tennis those two matches prior”.
