Arsene Wenger: What I really think about Arsenal’s draw with Southampton
Arsene Wenger’s side found Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster on top form at Emirates Stadium and the north London side has now taken just three points in four games.
The incident occurred after Wenger shouted towards referee Lee Mason, with the Arsenal manager attempting to confront him.
Wenger is waiting to hear if the incident involving the match official has been included in the referee’s report, which is due to be filed on Wednesday; he could face a misconduct charge if it is.
Arsene Wenger allowed his frustrations to boil over following the 0-0 draw with Southampton on Tuesday night after becoming involved in a tunnel confrontation with opposite man Ronald Koeman, with Arsenal losing further ground to Premier League title rivals Leicester and Manchester City.
Speaking after the game, Wenger said: “We put the energy level in and created chances”. We dropped points in the race but we have to focus on winning games and not focus too much on what our opponents do. “If you know a world-class striker who could strengthen our team you should have told me before the transfer window was over”.
“We’ll see at the end of the season”. The second positive is the number of chances we created after a hard first half [but] we didn’t score and dropped two points.
Giroud gave Forster more work to do with a header on 80 minutes following another Ozil delivery, while the Saints gloveman was on hand to prevent Sanchez from scoring a close-range victor five minutes from time to preserve an impressive clean sheet.
“Leicester won again and now I am sure that everybody will take them very seriously, especially in the media, so they will be under pressure as well”, said Wenger. “Not one team in one and a half years managing Southampton created as many chances as Arsenal tonight”, Koeman said.
The Emirates outfit have failed to score for a third consecutive game and their Premier League title hopes suffered a big blow.
Making that result, Arsenal’s largest Premier League defeat of the season, even more stunning, was the fact that it came in the midst of a torrid run for Southampton in which they only gained only one other point in seven matches.
