Indiana beats Michigan 80-67 after huge run to end 1st half
The Michigan Wolverines come into this game with a 17-5 record and are now 4th in the Big Ten. IN doesn’t have a top 50 RPI win yet and this would be a good one to get especially on the road in a hostile environment.
However, Rutgers (6-16, 0-9) and Minnesota (6-16, 0-10) are both still waiting on their first win in the league.
IN left Ann Arbor with an 80-67 win over the Hoosiers, and it could have been so much worse. They also do have a win over Maryland.
“I think probably, if I’d do it over again, use the third timeout which I don’t think I’ve ever done in the history of coaching”, Wolverines coach John Beilein said. It could be Tuesday or it could be in March. He averages 17.6 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game.
Anunoby’s length bothered Irvin, who shot just 1-of-8 from the field in 19 first half minutes. Five other Hoosiers had at least five points. Troy Williams will look to continue his breakout season, averaging 13.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game.
The fact that IN put points on the board is no surprise at all; the Hoosiers have been one of the most efficient teams IN the country even with the season-ending injury suffered by James Blackmon Jr. The Wolverines increased the lead to 15-4 on junior guard Derrick Walton’s 3-pointer with 14:31 remaining in the half.
After turning it over five times through the game’s first eight-plus minutes, IN had just seven turnovers over the next 32 minutes for a final turnover percentage of 17. The Wolverines play at a very controlled pace (KenPom has them at 314th in tempo) and love to hoist threes. This team however is a solid defensive team and can score the basketball which makes them fairly balanced. I’m talking about the giants, guys like Quinn Buckner, Isiah Thomas and Steve Alford and, of course, we know what they all have in common besides playing for Bob Knight: They won the big one. They have played a bit of a different team on the road and if they plan on winning this game, they can’t play like they have in the past two games. Ferrell had tons of help during the 25-0 run that actually stretched to 28-0 when O.G. Anunoby hit a three-pointer to open second-half scoring. Turning the ball over 19 times like they also did against Wisconsin will not fly against the Wolverines.
The Wolverines scored the game’s final nine points to make the final margin a lot more respectable than it could have been. Next up is a big game this weekend against Michigan State. This will be a big night for Bieleldt and it will be interesting to see how he plays.
