Raiders will stay in Oakland another year
“As of today, right now, we are in the process of trying to negotiate a one-year extension at the Oakland Coliseum to play the 2016 season there”, Davis said.
He said the Raiders are not seeking any changes to the terms of their lease from last season, so it’s “up to the city” when the agreement for 2016 is signed. The Chargers won’t join the Rams just yet as they try to secure a new stadium in San Diego, but their future remains uncertain, as well. That’s left the Raiders looking at multiple cities, none of which seemed ideal for next season, but perhaps are options for 2017.
Davis is actively pursuing options which would move the team in the future, but he said the “No. 1 plan” is to secure a deal in Oakland for 2016. “I’m an original L.A. Raider – I don’t want to take anything from the people here – but I’m saying if they weren’t going to be in Oakland, I’d like to see them in Los Angeles”.
Barring something unforeseen over the course of the next few days or weeks, the Raiders will call the Oakland Coliseum home once again. Davis, who has had conversations with billionaire Red McCombs about San Antonio and visited Las Vegas, said he didn’t consider any other temporary homes for the Raiders other than the planned Carson, California, project, which failed to gain approval at the recent owners meetings.
It’s there for the Raiders if they want it. It could be a long-term solution, Matthews said, for the franchise to stay in the Bay Area and give Raiders fans a continued opportunity to watch Carr and Co. play out their careers.
First, Davis noted that the league has announced that the Oakland situation, as it stands, is not acceptable – and the NFL has earmarked a total of $300 million to help the Raiders build a new stadium in the East Bay.
However, Davis said the “the Raider brand would do well there”.
The Raiders “were third in a three-team race”, Davis said.
“The Raider Nation is the greatest group of fans there are in the world”, Davis said.
So, for another season at least, Bay Area fans will get an up-close view of the continued progress of the silver and black under second-year head coach Jack Del Rio.
“I didn’t say it very artfully afterwards”.
