Hillary Clinton narrowly wins Democratic caucuses in Iowa
Before Iowa, some analysts predicted a profound impact. “In a Republican primary, you do not win if you’re going to sound like a liberal democrat criticizing Ted Cruz”. Meanwhile, Trump will try to regain momentum at a campaign rally later this evening in Milford, N.H. Will the new, more subdued Trump show up?
Another victor Monday in Iowa was Sen.
“Because I was told I could not do well in Iowa, I spent very little there – a fraction of Cruz & Rubio”, he tweeted, describing his finish as “a strong second” and “great honor”. The rest of the large GOP field scored in single digits.
Rubio on Tuesday told supporters in Exeter, “Perhaps no state in the country demands more of candidates than New Hampshire does”.
Trump has been leading the Republican polls in New Hampshire, which has historically favored more moderate candidates than Iowa.
When NECN’s Alison King asked Clinton if she thinks she can win New Hampshire, she replied, “I’m going to make my case and hope I can do very well next Tuesday”. His pitch isn’t just to the faithful; it’s also as a rock-solid conservative known for his aversion to compromise.

Bush’s strategy is centered on a strong performance in New Hampshire.
So is Rubio, who has played in both “lanes”, courting both tea-party-oriented Evangelicals and more mainstream Republicans.
Cruz and Trump also headed to New Hampshire as the presidential race shifted to the second nominating contest in the state-by-state battle to pick nominees for the November 8 election to replace Democratic President Barack Obama.
The dynamic on the Democratic side is completely different.
The third Democratic candidate, Martin O’Malley, had a small but enthusiastic group, but not enough for viability.
In the Democratic race, voters must choose between Clinton’s pledge to use her wealth of experience in government to bring about steady progress on party ideals and Sanders’ call for radical change in a system rigged against ordinary Americans.
“Financial markets might be more comfortable with Hillary (Clinton) than Bernie (Sanders)”, said Sean Callow, a strategist at Westpac Bank in Australia. “If Sanders had won half of the coin tosses and split the six delegates three and three with Clinton, he would have finished at 698.49 delegates to Clinton’s 696.57”.
“She’s been committed to the Democratic Party her entire life…”
Sanders has an 18 point lead in New Hampshire polls, with the primary a week away. Her “firewall” would be in the South. Young voters in Iowa overwhelmingly backed Sanders. “We’re having the same thing happen, just on the other side”.
In the Democrats’ caucuses, the total number of people in the room is counted – which is necessary, because each candidate needs to have at least 15 percent of those present in their corner to become “viable” and continue in the process.
