In news that is sure to cause the masses to exclaim “huh?”, Donald Trump has reportedly been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Nadia Murad, a woman who escaped Islamic Sate of Iraq and Syria sexual slavery.
The Republican candidate’s nomination letter said he should win the prize because of “his vigorous peace through strength ideology, used as a threat weapon of deterrence against radical Islam, ISIS, nuclear Iran and Communist China”, a Nobel watcher said.
Thankfully, the other Nobel Peace Prize nominees stand a much greater chance of actually winning than Trump.
Those on Harpviken’s list include US NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden; US Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz and Ali Akbar Salehi, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, for their work on the Iran nuclear deal; Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos, Timoleón Jiménez, and Thelma Aldana for their Colombian-FARC peace process involvement; Aura Elena Farfán, Iván Velásquez, Jeanne Nacatche Banyere, and Jeannette Kahindo Bindu for their work in Guatemala; and Congolese surgeon Dr. Denis Mukwege.
It’s unclear who nominated the US Republican Presidential hopeful, but Nobel rules declare you can not nominate yourself.
Not just anyone can nominate a potential peace prize recipient but it’s still a pretty wide range of people who have that power. The Norweigen Nobel committee, who eventually awards the prize, typically receives two hundred nominations in all.
Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu has given his backing to Pope Francis, as well as the economist Herman Daly and The Club of Rome think-tank for their “significant contributions to global understanding of sustainable development”.
The person who suggested it may genuinely mean it, but the person who suggested it may also realize that the very fact that Trump’s nomination gets confirmed has considerable interest in its own right, and that all publicity is good publicity.
That said, he’s going to need a lot of votes to make the shortlist of finalists for the prize. The victor of the Nobel Peace Prize 2016 will be announced in early October.
