DJ Big Kap, RIP
The day’s heat kept warping the records, resulting in repeated errors in Kap’s playback. In 1999, he and fellow NY DJ, Funkmaster Flex dropped ‘The Tunnel’ mixtape which featured cuts from Jay-Z, Tupac, and Biggie, to name a few. A staple in the city’s hip-hop community, Kap, born Keith Carter, was 45 at the time of his death on Wednesday (Feb. 3). Ab has been in charge of Big Kap’s social media posts and booking and was heavily promoting his upcoming gig on the Atlanta-based Internet radio station Highly Unique Radio and his Burn Unit Crew. His original “partner in crime”, Funkmaster Flex posted a series of photos on Instagram as a tribute to his late friend. The cause of death has not been announced.
He was also known as Notorious B.I.G.’s DJ and gained viral fame after video surfaced of him feeling the rapper’s wrath at 1995 Summer Jam after messing up on the decks. “Woke up to bad news today”, wrote Hot 97 DJ Peter Rosenberg. He was affiliated with the Flip Squad, a collective that included Flex, Mister Cee, Cipha Sounds, DJ Enuff, Mark Ronson, and more. “Last night when I talked to him, he was fine”.
