Under his plea agreement, Durst and the government have asked Engelhardt to recommend that he serve his sentence at a low-security federal prison on Terminal Island in San Pedro, in Los Angeles.

Durst and his wife Kathleen McCormack.
A Scarsdale native and an estranged member of the wealthy NY real estate family that runs 1 World Trade Center, Durst is accused of killing Berman to keep her from talking to NY prosecutors about the disappearance of Durst’s first wife, Kathleen, in 1982 when they were living in South Salem. “Killed them all, of course”, Durst said.
Durst pleaded guilty to one charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm at a re-arraignment hearing, according to Anna Christman with the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
The gun charge dates back to March 2015, when the Federal Bureau of Investigation arrested Durst at the J.W. Marriott Hotel on Canal Street in New Orleans due to suspicion that he was about to flee the country.
Durst, who claimed he killed the neighbor, Morris Black, in self-defense, was acquitted of murder in that case, even after he dismembered the man and dumped his remains in Galveston Bay. Durst was formally arrested early on the day of the broadcast.
The New York Times said he made the plea in federal court in New Orleans.
He also was caught on microphone saying, “There it is, you’re caught”, and “What a disaster”.
