Novak Djokovic won the 2016 Australian Open Men’s Singles Title
Novak Djokovic has a new goal for the year.
Before Mr Sears was cleared to fly back to Australia, Murray said he nearly put family before tennis.
After maintaining his flawless record in six finals at Melbourne Park – and extending old friend Andy Murray’s streak to five losses from five championship deciders Down Under – Djokovic had hundreds of Serbian fans singing and chanting his name so loudly, he could barely hear questions during a TV interview.
“To my wife Kim … she’s going to be watching back home now”.
He left for the airport immediately following after the final. He had done a similar gesture when he won at Wimbledon for the first time.
Djokovic’s relentless desire for tennis perfection has pushed him to a brilliant level, one that was too high for Andy Murray who lost Sunday’s final 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (7-3).
The No. 1-ranked player has one thing missing from his fast-growing collection of 11 Grand Slam trophies.
“Everything is going well privately as well”, Djokovic said.
Murray’s next assignment is expected to be in the Davis Cup in early March, when Britain begin the defence of their title with a first-round match against Japan in Bolton. “I’ve had a love affair with Rod Laver Arena for many years and I hope it can last a long time”. But it seemed however hard and deep Murray hit into either corner it came back with interest.
A jubilant Djokovic admitted he is playing at his peak. She wanted nothing to do with yet another unforced error in her Australian Open final against Angelique Kerber. And in the third set, Djokovic did just enough to win the tie-breaker in one hour four minutes.
After they exchanged breaks in the seventh and eighth games, Djokovic managed another break in the 11th to complete the set. Yet Murray kept trying and won three games in a row to lead 4-3 on their way to a tiebreak.
That is when the second seed started to crumple, double faulting to go down two games.
Vesnina and Soares won the last four points of the match tiebreaker to take the mixed doubles title with a 6-4, 4-6, 10-5 with over American Coco Vandeweghe and Hora Tecau of Romania. “The first set, I wasn’t there, but the second and third sets I do think were very close”.
“You know, I started the last couple of matches quite slowly, I think, understandable in some respects”, he said. “I was enjoying this two weeks so, so much, the best two weeks of my career”.
“I try to follow the same kind of lifestyle and routine that have been helping me to get to where I am”. But tennis is a sport of two players and Djokovic needs a true competitor across the net to make his matches truly compelling.
The title became the 11th career Grand Slam of Djokovic while the Serbian moved into equal fifth place with Rod Laver and Bjorn Borg behind 17-time leader Roger Federer.
A tearful Murray paid tribute to his other half after falling to a record fifth Australian Open final defeat, his fourth at the hand of Novak Djokovic, on Sunday.
“It’s been a tough few weeks for me away from the court”. “So I’m sure in the future you’ll have more opportunities to fight for this trophy”.
