Colorado Rockies vs Cincinnati Reds
Held hitless by Anthony DeSclafani through the first four innings and trailing 3-0, the Rockies erupted for five hits in the fifth but got only two runs after starting pitcher Eddie Butler, trying to score from second on LeMahieu’s long base hit to the right field wall, stumbled and fell twice rounding third and was tagged out as he neared home. Two innings later, he homered off JJ Hoover to knot the score at 4.
Rusin threw to first in an attempted pickoff but Hamilton was already headed to second, forcing a hurried and errant throw by first baseman Ben Paulsen that went into the outfield, allowing Hamilton to advance to third. Bruce singled to center.
By now it feels like nothing can go right for the Cincinnati Reds.
Cincy took a 4-3 lead in the eighth, getting a run off of LaTroy Hawkins. Colorado has spent every day since June 12 in the NL West cellar and solidified that spot even more by losing four of its first five following the All-Star break. Reds 4, Rockies 0. Barnhart singled to right, Suarez to second. “I want to win with the Rockies, but I would understand if they trade me”.
As mentioned by oddsmakers from online sports book GT Bets, the Rockies and Reds are both -105 on the money line respectively, while the over/under total is sitting at 11 runs.
With one out in the bottom of the ninth, Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon bunted for a single, his third hit of the game. It was Votto’s third hit of the game, an opposite-field shot to left and just the second homer allowed by Axford in 29 1/3 innings this season.
Rusin would earn a loss in the contest. LeMahieu’s groundout, and with Troy Tulowitzki at the plate, reliever Ryan Mattheus (1-2) bounced a wild pitch that Barnhart couldn’t corral. Think of the Royals, or the Mets, or anybody else who either (a) recently had an outfielder get injured, or (b) hasn’t had good offensive production from corner spots this year.
Then, Charlie tried to steal second, only to be called out by umpire Hunter Wendelstedt. He blanked the Rox for eight innings en route to his seventh victory of the year.
Rockies ninth. Ju.Diaz pitching.
Dia was relieved by the Reds’ lights out closer Aroldis Chapman.
Cueto (7-6), whose name has come up repeatedly in trade-rumors, put on a dominating display in hitter-friendly Coors Field, limiting the power-hitting Rockies’ lineup to four singles before being lifted for a pinch-hitter in the ninth.
Game 3: Rockies 17, Reds 7- The Rox steamrolled the Reds in Game 3 behind a ten run third inning and huge days from Carlos Gonzalez and Ben Paulsen. Colorado put up two in the first to open up the scoring thanks to a two run triple by Paulsen.
The Rockies will certainly be sellers at the trade deadline, that much is certain.
The Rockies didn’t stop rallying after that blast, as Nolan Arenado hit a triple off the auxiliary scoreboard in right that he (and Drew Goodman) initially seemed to think was a home run.
Gonzalez had tied the score at 3 when he led off the sixth with his 15th homer of the season. After Sunday’s game, CarGo’s batting average sits at.270, the highest it’s been since April 11. Votto entered Friday evening’s game having gone a billion for a million with a pair of dingers since the All Star Game – for which he was bypassed by fans, coaches, & players – and he kept that on display while the Reds disintegrated yet again.
