Chelsea hint Terry COULD still earn new deal
Terry was a pivotal figure as the Blues won their first league title in five years last season, playing every minute of all 38 games.
“He’s not what you normally see in a 35- or 36-year-old player, that you feel you are getting a bit slower and can not accept you’re in a danger zone for red cards etc. There is none of that for John”. Unfortunately it was a no [from the club].
The Telegraph reported that Terry dropped the bomb on Chelsea officials before the team’s 1-0 victory over Arsenal on January 24, saying that “it’s not going to be a fairytale ending, I’m not going to retire at Chelsea”.
Terry is the second highest-scoring defender in the Premier League history with 40 goals to his name.
‘But now we want to do well for John as well because he has done very well since he started at Chelsea and we want to win something for him’. It’s going to be elsewhere, which it took me a couple of days to get over.
“I am very surprised”. He is fit and performing well, as he has been while I’ve been here. He will do that regardless of the situation between him and the club. It is early, you have to see what is going on with the transition of the manager as well’. “I thought there would be much more activity but finally it has been quite and the fact we are all here means it is still quiet”. He has been playing very well since I arrived at Chelsea. But since then myself and everyone else has picked up back to where we are.
“Ideally, I would’ve loved to stay, but the club’s moving in a different direction”, he said.
The ex-England skipper has signed one-year extensions in each of his last two seasons with the Blues but is set to be allowed to leave the club – following the likes of Frank Lampard, Didier Drogba and Petr Cech in being offloaded.
Premier League (4 times): 2004-05, 2005-06, 2009-10 and 2014-15.
Wenger says Terry’s leadership qualities have impressed him throughout the 35-year-old’s career and, while he will not attempt to bring him to the Emirates Stadium, he has suggested his departure could destabilise the Premier League champions’ squad. With Chelsea not being sure on whether the new manager will want to keep the legendary centre-back or not, a new contract for Terry has not been forthcoming. “It certainly won’t be in the Premier League”. “No specific decision was made yet”.
“This is a story that has not finished”, Desailly told the Daily Express.
“The club are saying that they are still negotiating”. I wanted to hear it face to face. “I signed a contract a couple of months ago so that shows I want to be here”.
