Sanders Agrees To Debate Clinton On Thursday In New Hampshire
In theory (at least), Clinton was risking her spot in the two debates left on the original Democratic calendar.
Like Clinton, Sanders has been equally vocal about the devastation that has been caused in Flint.
The face-to-face meeting between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders is rooted in an intensifying debate over who understands the great divide between rich Americans and everyone else. “She can not be president without the enthusiastic support of those Sanders voters”.
The event comes just a day after Clinton was announced the victor of the Iowa Democratic caucus.
In a state suffering from a drug epidemic, combating the growing addiction to opiates and opioids has become a campaign issue for both Democrats and Republicans.
Sanders, I-Vt., responding to a question from moderator Anderson Cooper, said he respects the former secretary of state, but there are issues where she is “just not progressive”.
Sanders, a socialist, scoffs at that as the height of hypocrisy.
And she criticized Sanders for saying she was a progressive “some days”.
Harpootlian said he made the decision after talking with Sanders by phone last week.
“Some of my best friends are moderates, but you can’t be a progressive and a moderate at the same time”, Sanders said at the town hall, hosted by CNN, which included questions from voters.
“I do not know any progressive who has a super PAC and takes $15m from Wall Street”, said Mr Sanders. She said she doesn’t regret the speeches and won’t be swayed by the fees. “I know where I stand”.
“That’s what they offered, so…”, she said, drawing laughter.
The presidential debate Thursday night will reflect a changing Democratic race. The point, though, is whether she’s vulnerable to being influenced by big-money interests who have compensated her so handsomely.
Mrs Clinton, who followed him on to the stage in Manchester, said she was not bothered by his accusation but it was not helpful because they shared the same aspirations.
He also has a history of eyebrow-raising comments, once comparing South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley to Adolf Hitler’s wife, Eva Braun, and calling some state lawmakers “retards”.
One shudders to imagine the coverage if she had lost Iowa. Look for her to highlight her plans to make college more affordable, help small businesses and improve Obama’s health care law.
For Republicans, the pivot to New Hampshire meant the still-crowded cast of candidates has turned toward a less religious and mostly undecided electorate.
Clinton squeaked out a slight victory on Monday night, winning 700.59 state delegate equivalents to Sanders’s 696.82, according to the state party. Bernie Sanders in every major New Hampshire poll.
Five days before New Hampshire voters render a judgment in the second of the state-by-state presidential nominating contests, Clinton and Sanders will square off on MSNBC at 9 p.m. EST (0200 Friday GMT) in Durham, New Hampshire.
New Hampshire’s sizable contingent of independent voters – who are allowed to vote in either the Democratic or Republican primaries – will wield considerable power in the 2016 race.
