Sleeping Woman Pinned In Bed By 5,000 Pound Tree
A 20-year-old woman was asleep when the 5,000 pound tree unexpectedly fell into the second-story of the home and into her bedroom, police said.
Police say she became entrapped by tree and debris that came to rest on top of her shortly after midnight.
According to Chief James Neubert of the Great Neck Fire Department, neighbors were awakened by her screams and the pain she was in was “tremendous”.
Firefighters told WABC that they had to take down power lines and create a hole through the roof before cutting the woman free.
Several fire departments and emergency services units responded to the scene and were able to rescue the woman from under the tree. “A combination of different things saved her. Being on a bed took some of the cushioning in”.
The victim is being treated for multiple trauma injuries and is in serious but stable condition, according to the press release.
It’s unclear what caused the tree to fall, though officials contend it wasn’t the weather, which was mild at the time.
Forst said the victim’s family is grateful to the fire department for all the help she received.
