Joe Namath offers reward in search for missing Florida teens
Rescuers searching for two teenagers who disappeared off Florida were “very concerned” to find their overturned boat but no sign of the boys, a Coast Guard official told NBC News in an interview.
The nineteen foot, single engine boat the boys were in, was found capsized Sunday almost 200 miles down the coast.
The boys gassed up their boat to the tune of $110 on Friday at about 1:30 p.m.in the Jupiter area and were reported missing about three and a half hours later, reports USA Today on July 26.
The boat was not damaged and one life jacket was found on board, authorities said.
An “urgent marine information broadcast” was put out and the Coast Guard launched an HC-144 Ocean Sentry airplane and an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter out of Air Station Miami to search for Austin Stephanos and Perry Cohen.
The NFL Hall of Famer Joe Namath has offered a 0,000 reward in the search.
Coast Guard Petty Officer Mark Barney told the Daily News the search has covered 14,457 nautical miles.
Namath is a neighbor in Tequesta, Fla., of the boys’ families. “They are OK and we just need to find them”. “They’ve been through rough water, they’ve been through thin water”, said Nick Korniloff, Perry’s stepfather to reporters on Sunday, according to CNN.
The search for the boys was continuing on Sunday. As per the procedure, the guards will now tow the boat to Ponce de Leon Inlet, near St. Augustine and will be inspected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
Police say social media posts suggest the teens may have been headed to the Bahamas, but the boat they were in was found in the opposite direction towards Daytona Beach.
“We pray that Austin and Perry will be found safe”, he said, “that they will be returned home to their moms and their dads, that will hug them and kiss them and love them”.
“I just want them home”.
‘We’re all praying, ‘ Namath said at a press conference Sunday near his home in Tequesta.
With the reward on the table, boaters are expected to flock to the region to help.
