The Two Words Pres. Obama Thinks Muslims Don’t Hear Enough
But it was the president’s reference to the impact that rhetoric is having on young Muslim Americans that Dr. Elfass said would have special meaning for his community.
President Barack Obama’s first public appearance at an American mosque has drawn a lot of scrutiny from conservative pundits, with Herman Cain arguing on Fox News that the visit shows Obama is getting “kissy kissy” with Islamists like the Muslim Brotherhood.
According to the White House, the aim of Obama’s visit to the Islamic Society of Baltimore mosque is to celebrate the contributions Muslim Americans make to our nation and reaffirm the importance of religious freedom to our way of life.
“Most of the Muslim population in America, right now, feels very insecure”, said Ajazuddin Shaikh.
“We’ve seen too often people conflating the horrific acts of terrorism with the beliefs of an entire faith”, Obama said.
President Barack Obama reached out to Muslims in the United States on Wednesday in an impassioned speech, embracing them as part of “one American family”, implicitly criticizing the Republican presidential candidates and warning citizens not to be “bystanders to bigotry”. “No surprise, then, that threats and harassment of Muslim-Americans have surged”, he said. We’ve seen mosques vandalized.
“Let me say as clearly as I can as president of the United States: you fit right here”, Obama said.
However, Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders praised Obama’s mosque visit.
He also noted that the mosque he visited was twice attacked, while Muslim children were bullied, and mosques were vandalised across America. He said those who demonize all Muslims for the acts of a few are playing into terrorists’ hands. A recent poll found that 29% of Americans question whether Obama is in fact a Christian while another 13% said they doubt he was born in the United States. “This is a moment when, as Americans, we have to truly listen to each other and learn from each other”.
It’s the kind of effort that Muslim-Americans said they’ve been waiting for from America’s political and religious leaders.
Hate crimes against American Muslims have tripled since the terror attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, including incidents where vandals have thrown bacon and even a severed pig’s head at mosques.
