‘Deadpool’ Director Talks Showing the Grittier Side of Superhero in Imax Featurette
Another Marvel superhero gets the big screen treatment in Deadpool, but this one is definitely not for the kids.
So in world already drowning in superhero movies – Deadpool is the first of seven comic book movies coming out in 2016 – how is that this dark horse is standing out so successfully from the maddening crowd?
Actor Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin and T.J. Miller from “Deadpool” speak onstage at the 20th Century FOX panel during Comic-Con International 2015 at the San Diego Convention Center on July 11, 2015 in San Diego, California.
Following the news that his new movie Deadpool will not be getting a release in China because of what authorities deemed as unacceptable levels of violence, nudity and obscene language, Ryan Reynolds has a strongly worded message for the Chinese censors. After all, there’s a reason they call him the “Merc with a Mouth”.
Such descriptions, the actor admitted, were “physically hard to imagine”, which is probably why they were left out of the film.
IGN had a chance to catch up with T.J. Miller who plays Weasel in the Deadpool movie. We’ve been in this situation before – 2012’s very violent, cult-loved, based-on-a-comic Dredd didn’t even make it’s $45 million budget back – but hopefully, in light of Deadpool’s potential success, we’ll open up the potential to more adult-skewed blockbusters.
“When we were on set, [we would] have to worry about that all the time [and] it would really inhibit us in a lot of ways”, said the Deadpool director.
“I think it’s going to shape their tiny minds into wholesome, religious warriors”, adds Reynolds with a smile.
The film is slated for a February 12 release and is unsurprisingly rated R.
