Jeep Sales Starting In India By Mid
The expansion in India is another milestone by the Jeep brand. On the outside, the Grand Cherokee, with its famous American styling, has brought together a mix of adventure and luxury designs. Morrison was non-committal on the numbers, but said: “India is the fifth largest market in the world – lots of growth potential for future”.
In 2015, Fiat Chrysler announced its intent to invest approximately $280 million in Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited, the joint manufacturing venture it runs with Tata Motores Limited.
First up, it is the Grand Cherokee SRT – the most powerful and advanced Jeep ever built.
The facility will produce new Jeep vehicles and is expected to begin production in 2017. Incumbents like Audi, BMW, Mercedes and Land Rover have made hay by selling SUVs of various sizes in the country. Apart from the Grand Cherokee, the showstopper in the Jeep pavilion was the Wrangler. Jeep is mulling the key metros across India to commence sales, and gradually plans to move on to Tier-1 cities. For years, Jeep has been loosely used as a generic term to refer to mass market off-roaders that resembled the original Willy’s Jeep in shape and size. All the three products will be launched by mid 2016, a year that also marks the brand’s 75th anniversary. “It is our name and we will stake claim to it now that we are in India”, Flynn said. The Ranjangaon plant will be their fourth large volume plant outside the USA for the Jeep brand. “Both our powertrains are proven, and we will launch both Grand Cherokee and Wrangler with petrol and diesel options to tap into the full potential of this market”.
All this power and torque is sent to all four wheels on demand through an 8-speed automatic gearbox. The Wrangler on the other hand is being offered with both hard-top and soft-top variants.
