$63 million lottery prize not officially claimed
With just hours left for someone to claim an outstanding $63 million lottery prize in California, officials are still wondering who the lucky victor could be.
“When you get to that half-way point of the six-month period, then you start to worry that potentially this ticket’s lost”, Traverso said.
“But we have had lots of inquiries and the potential for more claims”.
Milliner filed papers to sue the California Lottery and the state of California on Wednesday in hopes of eventually being declared the victor.
There are nine California Lottery District offices where the victor could present the winning ticket with those magic numbers, 46-1-33-30-16 and a mega number of 24.
The ticket was sold at a 7-Eleven in the northwest Los Angeles neighborhood of Chatsworth, and the 180 days to claim it have now expired, according to KTLA.
A California Lottery spokesman told the wire service officials were investigating the claim.
In the lawsuit, Brand Milliner said he turned in his ticket and was told to expect the money but later learned from lottery officials his ticket was “too damaged to be processed”.
Lottery officials say they are looking into the claim.
The largest Irish Lotto prize to go unclaimed was a €3,445,223 Lotto jackpot, which was sold in The Acorn Newsagents in Coolock, Dublin 5 in June 2001.
The victor would stand to receive almost $40 million before federal taxes if opting for the winnings in a lump-sum payout, or the full $63 million paid out in installments over 30 years.
If none of the claims pan out, it will be the largest unclaimed prize in California Lottery history and the money will go to the state’s schools.
“That’s all prizes from somebody winning two bucks to, potentially, a jackpot like we’re talking about right now”, he said.
Someone who played the lottery in California missed out on the bus to easy street on Thursday, though one man claims that he had a ticket to ride.
A $77 million winning ticket in Georgia went unclaimed in 2011, and the Daily News could not find reports of a larger unclaimed sum in the U.S.
