Florida declares health emergency for Zika virus in four counties
The risk of sexual transmission of the Zika virus is thought to be extremely low, according to WHO.
“Travellers infected with Zika have entered Europe but the disease has not been transmitted further, as the mosquito is still inactive”. This, after they say they confirmed the state’s first case of sexually-transmitted Zika infection. All four people had recently traveled out of the country, said Dallas County health director Zachary Thompson. Names and genders of the two involved persons have not been released at time of press.
The Zika virus has been found in over two dozen countries, mainly in Latin America and the Caribbean.
Worldwide health authorities are trying to determine if the mosquito-borne illness is linked to birth defects in Brazil.
“I’ve never seen this advice before, and when you hear it, you think, ‘What are the bishops going to do?'” said the Rev. John Paris, who is a priest at Boston College.
“At present we are not aware of any suspected or confirmed cases of Zika virus in Northern Ireland”.
He also asked for at least 1,000 Zika antibody tests and said the state now has the capacity to test only 475 people.
The symptoms of Zika virus are generally mild, including fever, rash, joint pain and red eyes, according to the CDC.
Zika has been reported in 30 countries since it first appeared in the Americas previous year in Brazil, where it has been linked to thousands of babies being born with microcephaly.
Scott’s executive order requires the state health officer to “take any action necessary to protect public health” and allows the commissioner of agriculture to issue a “mosquito declaration” in the affected counties to reduce populations of the insects that can spread the disease. Both have since fully recovered.
You’ve probably heard about the Zika virus for the past few weeks. Canadian blood agencies earlier on Wednesday announced that anyone who had travelled to a Zika-risk area will be ineligible to give blood for three weeks upon their return. The timing has fuelled strong suspicions that Zika is causing the birth defect. “So we have to focus on the big picture”, said Mario Andrada, Com.
Travelers at the Jacksonville International Airport said they’re not too concerned about traveling within the US, but said some policies should be put into place to avoid the spread of the virus.
