What We Know: The case of slain Virginia 13-year-old
After Lovell’s body was found in rural North Carolina, almost 100 miles from her home, he was charged with murder.
“I was excited to be part of something secretive and special”, Keepers told FBI investigators, according to Montgomery County Commonwealth prosecutor Mary Pettitt, ABC News reported.
A presentation of facts, including information on Keepers’ involvement in Lovell’s murder, was also given during the hearing. Natalie Keepers, 19, was denied bond Thursday on charges of accessory to a felony and hiding a body.
Keepers and Eisenhauer planned to take Lovell “to a remote location under the guise of a date”, Pettitt said in court, according to the station.
Eisenhauer and Keepers had separate arraignments at Montgomery County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on Monday, appearing briefly while wearing orange jumpsuits and shackles. She did not suggest a possible motive, nor describe the killing itself.
After police issued a search warrant for Eisenhauer’s dorm room on January 30, he told police he had gone over to Nicole’s apartment after their phone call, and he saw her climb out of her window, Pettitt said.
After leaving Cook Out, they drove by Lovell’s home, Pettitt said. She was first charged with improper disposal of a body and being an accessory after the fact. Pettit says they bought cleaning supplies at one Wal-Mart and a shovel at another.
The judge didn’t find Natalie Keepers’ arguments for bail compelling, and said that she no longer has any ties to the community. Her mother, Tammy Weeks, went to Nicole’s bedroom door and found it barricaded, the prosecutor said.
A neighbor said she told 8-year-old friends before she vanished that she planned to sneak out to meet her 18-year-old “boyfriend”, a man she said was named David, whose picture she displayed on her phone.
Keepers’ parents said that if she were released on bail, their daughter would be under constant supervision.
He said that his daughter is being kept in solitary confinement at the jail because she is “not street smart” and could be targeted by other inmates.
“I’ve learned how to love myself and to take care of myself and deal with any stress that I have”, Keepers said, describing how she had promised a friend that if she stopped cutting herself, she would get a tattoo of a semi-colon, representing that her life was not ending, but taking a new path.
Excelling in the classroom and on the track, Eisenhauer drew raves from his coach and principal at Wilde Lake High School, and was focused on competing with top college runners. Her lawyers did not speak to reporters outside court Thursday.
Keepers displays a packed resume on her LinkedIn profile, including a summer internship with NASA, where she made how-to videos for engineers.
