Pregnant woman found with Zika in Spain

In newly issued guidelines about sexual transmission of the disease. official said men who have traveled to Zika-infected countries should use condoms or abstain from sex for the duration of their partner’s pregnancy.

In a health advisory earlier this week, the DCHHS said one of the patients got sick after recent travel to an affected South American country and that the second patient had not traveled, but came down with symptoms after sexual contact with the traveler.

News of the mosquito-borne virus, thought to cause birth defects, first emerged in Brazil previous year, and health authorities have warned the disease could infect up to four million people in the Americas and spread worldwide.

Common symptoms of Zika virus include fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis (red eyes).

Adalja says it’s a preventive measure because Florida has seen cases of dengue fever and the chikungunya virus, which are spread similarly to the Zika virus.

“Short of stopping people of traveling altogether, I don’t know where the solution is going to be”, Thompson said.

The World Health Organization has said it suspects the virus might be behind a sudden spike in birth defects in a part of northern Brazil.

“One of the things that makes us in Florida a little bit safer is that we have much better mosquito control mechanisms”, said Florida International University assistant professor of biology Matthew DeGennaro, quoted by the Miami Herald.

The kind of mosquito that spreads Zika is found along the southern states, so experts think it’s likely the pests may end up spreading the virus there.

Aircraft returning to the United Kingdom from countries affected by the Zika virus are to be sprayed with insecticide, Jane Ellison, the public health minister has announced.

On Tuesday, two cases of the virus were confirmed in Ireland, according to the country’s Health Services Executive.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, a person had caught the virus after a blood tranfusion from a donor who had been infected with Zika.

Zika usually is transmitted through bites from infected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, which are common in Florida, along the Gulf Coast and states that border Mexico.
