John Terry could be handed new contract, reveals Guus Hiddink
Chelsea captain John Terry will leave the English Premier League champion at the end of the season after the club he has served since the age of 14 told him it would not be renewing his contract.
Terry made the comments following Chelsea’s 5-1 FA Cup 4th round win over MK Dons on 31 January.
“He is a fantastic servant of Chelsea and a superb captain and, as such, the club will keep the channels of dialogue open”.
The 35 year old’s current contract expires at the end of the season, and as it stands, the club will not be giving him a new deal.
Harry Redknapp believes Chelsea will be losing an invaluable player in the dressing room at the end of the season when John Terry leaves the club.
However, Blues boss Guus Hiddink was surprised with Terry’s statement and feels there is still time for dialogue to take place between player and club.
However, despite his desire to retire with Chelsea, a number of sides in China as well as the MLS are keen to add the former England worldwide into their ranks. He is fit and performing as he is.
“You can’t make decisions based on sentiment and long service”.
Speaking at his press conference ahead of Tuesday’s match at home to Southampton, the Frenchman said: “The whole period was much quieter than I expected”.
If he does not return, Terry admitted he has been offered a route back to the club once his playing career his over, and he said: “We spoke about my legacy and coming back to the club when I finish”.
“It became clear this season with the mutiny, for want of a better word, that maybe JT didn’t have the power of old to bring it all back into line”.
“I think he still has a role to play”.
Terry is a club legend at Stamford Bridge, having enjoyed a glorious trophy-laden career with the Blues, for whom he has made nearly 700 appearances.
“Ever since I have been at Chelsea, there has been a lot of rotation”.
“We want to give everything for the fans, for everybody, but now we want to do well for John as well because he has done very, very well since he started at Chelsea and we want to win something for him”, he concluded.
“John’s statistics, not just that but also the view we have on him, I have on him, he’s very fit”, explained the manager. It’ll just be elsewhere.
