NYC police officers wounded in public housing shooting
Two New York Police Department officers were shot while patrolling a Bronx housing project Thursday night, including one who was shot in the head, authorities said.
The two injured officers were rushed to Lincoln Hospital.
After shooting the officers, police said, the gunman ran to a seventh-floor apartment, where he shot himself.
The two officers were conscious but in critical condition, a law-enforcement official said.
The housing development is located in the 40th Precinct, where Officer Sherrod Stuart was shot in the ankle by friendly fire during a shootout on January 9.
The gunfire reportedly started around 8 p.m. local time.
The mayor raced to the hospital after delivering his annual State of the City speech five miles away at Lehman College.
The suspect then fled into an apartment on a higher floor.
The extent of the injuries received by the officers was not initially known.
The head of the police officers’ union, Patrick Lynch, said the shooting shows the unsafe nature of the job. Police say a suspect is in custody. He was in surgery Thursday night.
Both officers, both who worked in the NYPD’s housing division, were conscious and alert after the shooting, according to Breaking 911 news.
Police are searching for at least one suspect.
A 29-year-old male officer was shot in the face and the 24-year-old female officer was shot in the stomach.
First Deputy Commissioner Benjamin Tucker delivers an update at Lincoln Hospital on two police officers who were shot in Melrose Houses on Thursday, February 4. Their conditions are unknown.
“We’ll know more as soon as the Mayor is briefed by the NYPD”, mayoral spokeswoman Karen Hinton said.
