Robert Durst Of HBO’s ‘The Jinx’ Pleads Guilty To Gun Charges
NY real estate heir Robert Durst has pleaded guilty to a gun charge in Louisiana, clearing the way his transfer to Los Angeles to face a murder charge in connnection with the death of his writer friend Susan Berman.
Durst’s defense attorney Richard DeGuerin said he would push to move Durst to California, so he can prove his innocence in court. He describing the proposed sentence as “the result of very intense negotiations” among federal prosecutors, Durst’s attorneys, and the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office, which originally brought a weapons charge against Durst.
Robert Durst, subject of HBO’s true crime documentary The Jinx, is one step closer to serving quite a bit of time in prison.
The real-estate heir pleaded guilty to felony gun possession Wednesday in New Orleans. He appeared frail and hunched over, according to NBC News. Durst is expected to go on trial on murder charges this summer in California. The FBI had found the revolver, along with $42,000 in cash, marijuana, and a latex mask, in his New Orleans hotel room when he was arrested previous year. Shortly after that interview, Durst excused himself to the bathroom and, unaware that his microphone was still recording, said to himself, “What the hell did I do?” In that case, Durst successfully argued that his victim’s death was an accident. The maximum penalty Durst could have faced was 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. In December, his attorneys and Los Angeles prosecutors signed an agreement that he would be extradited by August 18. He’ll serve his time at FCI Terminal Island, a low-security prison near Los Angeles. In 2000, police were preparing to question Berman, a friend of Durst’s, in the investigation of the disappearance of his first wife, Kathleen McCormack. The others are his first wife, Kathleen, who disappeared in 1982, and his neighbor Morris Black, who was killed and dismembered in 2003. He was formally arrested early on the day of the broadcast.
He ultimately testified that he killed Black in self-defense, and was acquitted of murder.
“There it is, you’re caught”, he said at another moment.
