Police Investigate Altercation Between Browns QB Johnny Manziel and Girlfriend
Committed party animal Johnny Manziel is back in the headlines after he was questioned by cops over an incident with his girlfriend early this morning.
Police didn’t say if the ex-girlfriend was injured. The 23-year-old defensive tackle picked up the 26-year-old woman at her home and took her to a Manhattan hotel, where the alleged attempted rape occurred. She was uncooperative with officers and raised concerns about her ex-boyfriend’s well-being.
Fort Worth police said they notified their colleagues in Dallas of a possible disturbance in their jurisdiction.
One former Fort Worth city council member, now a prominent attorney who often represents police and firemen, joked that the helicopter “probably took Manziel to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ house”, the Star-Telegram reported. Police tried calling Manziel’s cellphone and searching for him before it was determined he was safe. An email sent Saturday to Manziel’s agent, Erik Burkhardt, was not immediately returned. He was not charged or disciplined by the league.
“We are aware of it and looking into it”, National Football League spokesman Greg Aiello said, per Cabot.
Deadspin also noted that this was the second time Manziel and his girlfriend were involved in this type of incident. They did not say if she was hurt.
Manziel’s future with the Browns has been in doubt for weeks, and the latest of many incidents could hasten the separation. In October, 2015, police in Avon, Ohio were alerted after several witnesses claimed they saw the couple fighting in a vehicle. Manziel was demoted to the third string for the next game. He has never publicly disclosed why he was admitted to facility.
While it is obviously important to note that no one was arrested, it is still not a good look for Manziel – especially with a new head coach and management team in place for the Browns.
Less than a week after being named the Browns’ starter in mid-November, another video surfaced online of Manziel holding a bottle at an Austin, Texas, club during the team’s bye week.
Haslam also said he thought the Browns’ relationship with Manziel could be fixed, but that doesn’t seem the least bit realistic.
“I think Johnny made progress on the field a year ago. I think that’s undeniable”, Haslam said.
