NYPD officers shot in Melrose; 1 shot in head
Two New York Police Department officers were shot and injured after confronting two men in a public housing complex. The officers, a 24-year-old woman and 29-year-old man are both at Lincoln Hospital. Police said “several individuals” had been taken to the 40th Precinct in connection with the investigation – and said the second suspect involved in the initial confrontation was in custody. Police say the shooter fled into an apartment where officers found him dead of an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound. They were struck, one in the face and the other in the abdomen, police said.
Three officers had been conducting a patrol in one of the building’s stairwells when they found two suspects, one of whom opened fire and wounded the two officers. 2016, as Mayor Bill de Blasio looks on.
The officers are listed in stable condition Friday.
Neither officers’ wounds were life-threatening, the NYPD tweeted.
The mayor was briefed as soon as he left the stage and was headed to the hospital, Hinton said. “Our fearless officers were doing their jobs tonight in our public housing on patrol keeping residents safe”, de Blasio said.
New York City’s top cop has ordered officers to wake up passengers who nod off while riding the subway.
De Blasio was giving his speech in front of a crowd at Lehman College just a few miles away at the time of the shooting. Police recovered two guns. He said the shooting shows the difficulty and danger of vertical patrols.
Police Commissioner Bill Bratton, who was in San Antonio for a policing conference, expressed on Twitter how proud he was of his officers.
Governor Andrew Cuomo also took to Twitter after the shooting, writing: “My thoughts are with the 2 #NYPD officers shot tonight in the line of duty”.
