Santorum Suspends Campaign, Endorses Rubio, Adviser Says
Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum, victor of the 2012 Iowa Republican caucuses, is planning to make two “major announcements” amid unconfirmed reports that he will withdraw from the 2016 presidential race.
“We decided that we want to find a candidate that really espoused the values that he we believed in”, he said, adding that he wanted someone who cared about the middle class and family values. “Donald Trump built a company, Marco Rubio – finish the sentence”.
Rubio, said Santorum is the new generation, someone who can bring the country back together.
Eventually, after several minutes of floundering on screen, Santorum was able to point to a Rubio-backed provision aimed at Obamacare that was inserted into the recent spending bill-but then quickly returned to what I can only assume were not Rubio-approved talking points. Pat Toomey, R-Penn., and Tim Scott, R-S.C.
Santorum is expected to appear on Fox News tonight to announce he’s dropping out and is also expected to endorse one of his former rivals, according to The Washington Post. “Here’s a guy who has a wonderful life story, but who also knows how to create a political agenda based on the reality that so many people are suffering through”, he said.
Republican U.S. presidential candidate Senator Rick Santorum speaks at the 10th Annual Iowa Renewable Fuels Summit in Altoona, Iowa, in this January 19, 2016, file photo. That’s one thing I’m familiar that I just saw recently.
When pressed again, Mr Santorum said there “isn’t a whole lot of accomplishments”.
Ever since Santorum announced his run for president on May 27, 2015, Santorum’s campaign failed to gather momentum, polling at single digits nationally – and even in Iowa where he spent most of his time.
For many White House hopefuls, Iowa is the promised land. That’s quite a potential hunting ground for Ted Cruz.
He ultimately won 11 states in the GOP’s 2012 primary election after an unexpected and narrow victory in the opening contest in Iowa, where he emerged as a conservative favorite after touring the state’s 99 counties in a pickup truck.
Although Rubio didn’t sign the same pledge from the National Organization for Marriage, the candidate opposes same-sex marriage, voted as a US senator against the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, has pledged to reverse President Obama’s executive order prohibiting anti-LGBT discrimination among federal contractors and hinted he would appoint justices to the Supreme Court who would overturn the ruling in favor of same-sex marriage.
