Ohio EPA releases latest Sebring water test results
“We are in this fight for the long haul and we will keep fighting to protect OH families from lead – whether it’s in drinking water or the paint in our houses”, he said. It also would require the U.S. EPA to post test results online, Mr. Brown said.
Because of the water crisis in Flint, Mich., as well as in Sebring in Mahoning County, U.S. Sen.
The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency says nine samples of a total of 259 samples collected from Sebring Water customers’ homes had elevated levels of lead in their tap water.
“The village is still required to complete all immediate, short-term, and long-term actions required by the Ohio EPA Director”.
It followed the ongoing controversy over residents in the northeast OH village of Sebring not being told for months about lead in their water – which came on the heels of a public health emergency due to the issue in Flint, Michigan.
Brown said the legislation will “ensure” communities in OH and across the country can address threats from lead “in an efficient, transparent, and accountable way”.
The state blamed the local water treatment plant and a lack of federal rules.
The outreach was part of a new push by Ohio EPA to address lead contamination in villages and mobile home parks across Ohio.
New advisories being sent to OH communities previously found to have high lead levels in tap water suggest children and pregnant women in those areas should instead drink bottled or filtered water. The Mayo Clinic says that lead “can severely affect mental and physical development” in children and can even be fatal at high levels. He said in a statement last month that his team was “too patient” in dealing with village officials.
The EPA also approved a plan Thursday to add a chemical to correct the acidity of the water in the distribution system and also coat the pipes so that the lead will not leach.
Most, but not all, of those tests have shown lead levels below the level allowed by federal rules.
Sebring’s drinking water advisory won’t be lifted until authorities “receive two rounds of successful sampling events in consecutive six-month periods”, according to the state.
