Continental recalls 5 million vehicles for a different kind of airbag problem
Several automakers are recalling more than 5 million vehicles distributed worldwide over growing concerns in air bag problems. In fact, he said, numerous roughly 1 million vehicles that have already had airbags replaced may need to have those replacement airbags replaced as well.

On Thursday, Fiat Chrysler said it is recalling 112,000 USA vehicles for the same issue, including the 2009 Dodge Journey, 2008-2009 Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town and Country and 2009 Volkswagen Routan that it had assembled for the German automaker.
In January 2008, Continental conducted its first round of investigation when a malfunctioning air bag control system was removed from a Mercedes auto. The Japan recall affects vehicles produced between the years 2005 to 2014.
Continental in regulatory filings said variations in the manufacturing process for a power-supply component can cause a semiconductor material to corrode and eventually cut electrical connections. Honda’s latest recall is included in that count. While Mercedes, Fiat Chrysler and Honda all responded promptly to the allegations and issued massive recalls from 2008 to 2009, the issue is far from over for all these automakers.
Repairs on affected vehicles will start this summer. She said it was up to carmakers to issue a recall.
