Complaints over sexual harassment at Cologne Carnival double
The shocking incident took place in the Alter Markt district of town as she appeared on air for the one o’clock news for Radio Télévision Belge de la Communauté Française (RTBF).
The victim said: ‘At first they were just making faces behind me. Then a hand landed on my breast.
Police is now on the hunt to nab the accused.
Furthermore, Cologne police said they are now investigating the incident and 22 other sexual assaults which were reported on the first evening of the carnival. There were also 143 cases of bodily harm and 30 robberies.
However, police say the rising number is due to the public’s increasing willingness to report assault following the incidents on December 31st.
“The cameraman and I could tell there were a lot of drunk people around. At that moment, I lost my temper”. “I was shocked”, she later wrote in a piece to RTBF.
Police said a young woman was approached by an unknown man who knocked her out and raped her.
The added security included the establishment of “safe zones” for women who felt they were harassed, groped or raped to speak with social workers. “Don’t touch me, don’t touch me!'”
The three men did not seem to understand why she was angry, and walked off without a word.
‘When the news editor called me to see if I wanted to come home I was confused to begin with, ‘ she said.
The city has been on high alert for sexual assault after hundreds of woman filed criminal complaints of having been groped on New Year’s Eve by men described as being of North African or Arabic origin. Labye later received an apology from the German city.
“I have worked in Afghanistan and North Africa too, and nothing untoward ever happened to me as a white, female journalist”, she said Friday after the news of the attack.
Although the week-long Carnival typically draws more than one million visitors, initial reports were that the numbers were much lower this year.
