Gunmen shoot boxing fans at Dublin hotel; 1 dead, 2 wounded
Detectives have yet to disclose a motive for Friday’s shooting in the lobby of the Regency Hotel in northern Dublin, where fans were attending a weigh-in event for boxers ahead of a weekend boxing competition.
Police said they were called to the Regency Hotel in north Dublin at around 2:30 pm (1430 GMT) where they found three injured men, all in their 20s or 30s.
He continued: “The man who is now dead – he was no more than six foot from me”.
When gunmen opened fire at a Dublin hotel, with fighters clad in nothing but their underwear, bloody chaos ensued.
The headline fight on Saturday night’s card was Jamie Kavanagh V Antonio Joao Bento for the WBO European Lightweight Title.
“It’s so surreal, it just happened so quickly, right in front of me”.
Mel Christle, president of the Boxing Union of Ireland, said the gunfire started seconds after the final boxer was weighed in.
Chief Superintendent Barry O’Brien tonight said: “We know that there were a considerable number of people present in the Regency Hotel and we are appealing to them to provide any information they may have in relation to the shooting”.
BoxNation, the British cable channel promoting Saturday’s bout, said in a tweet that the event had been cancelled.
A third man dressed in a Garda uniform and a fourth – dressed as a woman – were also involved in the hit, which is believed to be linked to the murder of criminal Gary Hutch, a nephew of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch. One has died and the other two are being treated at a hospital. In 2014, Jamie Kavanagh’s father Gerard Kavanagh, a known gang enforcer, was shot and killed in a bar in Dublin, and the shooting of former boxer Jamie Moore was tied to the gang wars as well.
A JOURNALIST who witnessed the shocking gun attack at a Dublin boxing weigh-in said he “never felt terror like it” when one of the attackers pointed an AK-47 at him.
“The gunshots I heard after I jumped over the receptionist’s desk were probably the gunshots that finished him off”.
Box Nation said in a statement on Twitter that the show has now been cancelled due to the shooting.
