‘Trailer Park Boys’ actress on hot seat at Ghomeshi trial
During the sexual assault trail of former host Jian Ghomeshi Friday, it was revealed that Lucy DeCoutere, a star of the TV and film series ‘Trailer Park Boys, ‘ used racy language in her email to him.
Her tactics have sparked widespread debate about how sexual assault complainants are treated, with many arguing that the tactic contributes to the retraumatization of victims.
Ghomeshi is charged with four counts of assault and one count of overcoming resistance by choking.
A television actress acknowledged Friday that she told a former Canadian Broadcast Corp. radio host that she wanted to have sex with him a day after he allegedly choked and slapped her.
DeCoutere conceded that she had attempted to maintain a sort of friendship with him over the years because she knew they would be crossing paths at public events.
While in his bedroom, DeCoutere testified that Ghomeshi suddenly started kissing her and then, without her consent, pushed her against a wall, choked her and slapped her three times in the face with an open hand.
But on Friday, defense lawyers for Ghomeshi confronted DeCoutere with a series of messages the witness said she had forgotten and, as a result, did not show to police or prosecutors.
DeCoutere read the letter’s sign off at the request of Henein.
In a handwritten letter days later she writes: ‘I love your hands’.
Ghomeshi “admitted that he does enjoy engaging in violence for sexual pleasure”, Hnatiw said, referencing a Facebook post the broadcaster shared on October 26, 2014, that said he enjoyed consensual “rough sex” and “forms of BDSM”. DeCoutere said she forgot about the email, but it “doesn’t change the fact of the matter”.
She repeatedly said that she was not, despite sending several emails asking to meet up with him, including one that contained a photo of her simulating a sexual act.
“I don’t remember cuddling with him in the park”, she said. “What Lucy did, and how she felt in the aftermath of the assault does not change that essential fact”, Hnatiw said. “I’ve done that lots of times”. DeCoutere testified she hung around after the alleged assault because she was trying to “normalize” a situation that had left her stunned. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts, and has always denied any wrongdoing.
Earlier this week, DeCoutere told the court that they did meet in Banff, and the pair sang the Britney Spears song “Hit Me Baby One More Time” at karaoke.
On Thursday, Henein also accused DeCoutere of withholding information that indicated she’s been dishonest about her and Ghomeshi’s relationship.
Kathryn Kuitenbrouwer, author of All the Broken Things, says she is among those feeling traumatized.
“Even for me to come and talk today, I went through a kind of process of deliberating whether it was the right thing to do, and whether I should worry if my mother listens to this show or whether my children will hear it”, she said.
Police say they were called to the front steps of the courthouse shortly after 7 a.m., where witnesses say a man was yelling and pointing his fingers, indicating he had a weapon.
Ms. Decoutere replied that she did not understand the importance of these communications after the alleged incident.
